Same Sex Attraction

What's the difference between SSA and homosexual acts?

God is Love.1 John 4:8

"God is Love" (1 John 4:8). This is a fundamental aspect of our faith, and every way that we express love in our own lives should be an imitation of God's own love for us. Sometimes though, it can be difficult for us to tell how we can properly express this love in our own lives. Sex is one way in which we can express this love, but it is a gift that should only be expressed in certain circumstances.

There is an important distinction here between same-sex attraction and homosexual acts (i.e. sex). Same sex attraction isn't necessarily sinful, but acting on this attraction always is. It may feel like sex is just one way of expressing love or attraction to someone, but this isn't the view of sexuality that Jesus teaches us. Growing to this proper understanding of sexuality is usually a life-long process, whether we experience same-sex attraction or not.

It is important to acknowledge the fact that experiencing same sex attraction or committing homosexual acts does not condemn anyone automatically to hell. A good reminder here is the story of John 8:1-11, in which Jesus says: "Let the man without sin cast the first stone" at the woman caught in adultery. Every single one of us is a sinner, and the most important thing is that we recognize our faults, ask for God's forgiveness, and strive to grow in sainthood.
